October 23, 1928 - July 12, 2021
Joyce LaVerne (Buls) Otto, 92, of Needville, Texas passed away on July 12, 2021 in Richmond, Texas. Born on October 23, 1928 in Houston, Texas to George and Lucille Buls, she graduated from Boling High School and attended Sam Houston State University. She was a long-time member of Needville United Methodist Church where she shared her love of music by playing the organ for Sunday services and various church celebrations. For over 20 years Joyce taught piano and guitar to many students after school in her home. She provided the music at many weddings and funerals within the community, and at times played accompaniment for students at instrumental competitions including her daughters and grandsons. When her husband started his real estate career, Joyce was by his side handling the administrative duties, answering the phone, and even painting signs. Joyce was a seamstress. She sewed her daughters’ clothes early on and then graduated to a great, creative costume maker for all their dance recitals and high school twirling years. Lots of fun was had while designing, building, and stuffing extravagant Needville Youth Fair parade floats with her special friends. Being a good cook, Joyce was well-known for her pies, in particular apple. Another big hit was her pimento cheese sandwiches which were carried in her daughters’ school lunches and often traded for kolaches. When her daughters left home for college, Joyce and Monroe became season ticket holders of Texas Aggie football games. That became a love they shared with their children and their families for many years. They also were supporters of the Needville Little League when their grandsons played baseball, and of the arts when their granddaughter attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Joyce was blessed to know and love all six great grandchildren. And, there were many family vacations near and far enjoyed by all. Her last few years had joy while enduring Alzheimer’s disease. She lived it with grace and strength, and the love of the Lord. The family is so proud of her. This loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend will truly be missed. In addition to her parents, Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Wilson Otto. Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Ford and Laurie Pollicoff (husband, Jeffrey B. Pollicoff); grandchildren, Russell Charles Ford (wife, Natalie Mason Ford), Michael Scott Ford (wife, Tiffany Stolarsky Ford), and Paige Leigh Pollicoff; great grandchildren, Emily Grace Ford, Logan Douglas Ford, Ryan Scott Ford, Sawyer Charles Ford, Brody Nathaniel Ford and Crew Russell Ford; along with extended family and friends. The Otto Family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Peggy Sebesta for the dedicated care and loving relationship with Joyce over the years. A private family service will be held on Monday, July 26, 2021 in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.
