Victor Charles Novosad

Victor Charles Novosad, former Postmaster at Sugar Land, Texas, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014. He was born in Yoakum on December 21, 1928 to Rudy and Ann Jansky Novosad. He is survived by his wife, Maurice Spivey Novosad. They were married 61 years. Together, they had four children, Vicki Rizzo Jack, Shelley Richey L. E., Cody Novosad and Chris Novosad Diana; six grandchildren, Mauri Oliver, Chelsea Purifoy Jason, Carter Townsend, Jake, Eliza, Sydney Novosad; and one great grandson, Jack Purifoy. Victor is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, R. J. Novosad. Vic began his career with the U. S. Postal Service in Rosenberg after graduating from college in 1948, and retired as Postmaster of Sugar Land following 32 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served there with the Postal Service Unit of the 40th Infantry Division. Vic resumed his career in Rosenberg upon discharge, serving there as Assistant Postmaster and transferring to Sugar Land in that same position. He was appointed Sugar Land Postmaster in 1967, where he served until his retirement. Although his main priority was with his family, he was active for many years in numerous affairs. He was particularly proud of his many years of service to the Boy Scouts of America, as a Scout Master in Rosenberg, and later as Assistant Scout Master in Sugar Land, where his two sons were Scout members. He served successively as secretary, president and board member of the Sugar Land Lions Club and held a variety of positions in the Lions District Cabinet. Representing the Sugar Land Club, he spearheaded the fund-raising and construction of the city's first public swimming pool. Vic was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, and in 2011, was awarded life membership in St. Basil's Knights of Columbus in Sugar Land. He also held lifetime memberships in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Family will receive visitors from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Vic's name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to St. Jude's Children Hospital.
