Sue Staggs

Sue Staggs, 66, passed away at her home in her sleep on April 25, 2010. She was the executive director of Community Action Partnership for Prevention, a community-based coalition addressing drug abuse and crime. Widely recognized for her work in the war on drugs in schools and communities, Mrs. Staggs led passage of 28 city ordinances to combat prostitution, illegal liquor and street drug sales in Richmond, Texas; additionally, she led a campaign to deny renewals of alcohol licenses in a high-alcohol use area, created a countywide task force to reduce underage drinking and reduced alcohol signage at County Fair and Rodeo. Her lifelong interest in youth was manifest in her years as a high school teacher and as the developer of teen leadership programs such as "Tomorrow's Leaders Today" recognized by the Texas Education Agency as a "promising practice". She established more than 200 teen coalitions across Texas in which 100% completed community projects. She co-wrote and was organizing director of "Texans Standing Tall", a statewide coalition to reduce underage drinking. Mrs. Staggs was a CADCA Leader/Mentor and co-chaired the Project of National Significance. Her 26-year span of work with non-profit organizations includes work with the Arthritis Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the YWCA, the American Red Cross, and federal programs CADCA, CSAP, and SAMSHA. Among organizations who have recognized her work and her passion for service are the 4-H Clubs and the American Diabetes Association. In 2007, at the CADCA National leadership Forum XVII, she was awarded the prestigious national Advocate of the Year designation. Her passion was helping people, individually and collectively. Her talents at counseling, teaching, and organizing will be missed; and her infectious love of life will continue to impact those who knew her. Immediate family survivors are her husband of 37 years, Alton; son, Montgomery and wife, Kristen, of Fort Collins, Colorado; son, Mitchell, of Richmond; and grandchildren on whom she doted, Mason and Zoe, of Fort Collins. Memorial services for Sue will be held at 2:00 P. M., Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg. For those wishing, donations in memory of Sue may be made to any Habitat For Humanity organization.
