Richard Bryant Miller

Richard Miller died peacefully last week surrounded by his family at the too-young age of 60 years. He said his greatest achievement was to launch his daughters into the world where they are multiplying the values of kindness, generosity and service he modeled for them. He died confident in the knowledge that they embrace the saving grace of Jesus Christ as he did himself. Richard was a constant student of the Bible, most recently with Community Bible Study in Houston where he found a band of brothers walking alongside him through this past year of illness and uncertainty. Richard managed his financial resources prudently and shared them generously, letting the inspiration of the Holy Spirit guide him. He embraced his spiritual gift of administration, using it to support and lead service organizations including Habitat for Humanity in Bakersfield, Calif, Prestige Learning Institute ministry to refugees in Houston and Crown Financial Ministries. With Crown, Richard was thrilled to coach many people to use Biblical principles to organize their finances and find a sure path to peace and generosity. He dedicated his time to others after retiring from a 32-year career with Chevron, mostly as a project manager in Houston, California and on overseas projects. He knew how lucky he was to find his job enjoyable and challenging and to work with the highest quality of colleagues. Richard earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1988 and was a loyal, long suffering fan of his beloved Yellowjackets. He is a graduate of Dalton High School where he proudly played flugel horn in the marching band. His dear parents, older brothers and childhood friends helped shape the generous, goofy, good man he would become. Richard greatly appreciated life’s little pleasures: a glass of red wine, a plate of cookies, Angela’s fresh-baked bread, the fragrance of a fruit tree in bloom, a scenic overlook at sunset, the song of a train whistle on the breeze, a good map, conversations with friends and strangers, deep musings with Danielle, singing with Melanie, exploring a new place, sitting on his back porch, a round of golf — finding as many balls on the course as he lost to the water — a good sermon, a Christian mystery novel, Isaiah 40, a funny little dog, and a walk anywhere holding his sweetheart’s hand. He is survived by Angela, his wife and best friend of 33 years, his two daughters, two brothers, and a lovely extended family of nieces, nephews and in-laws.
