Matylde Rita Butler

Matylde Gaidosik Butler’s spirit passed from this earth on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Rose hill Assisted Living in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by her family at the age of 96. She was preceded to heaven by her husband LD Butler, her parents Josephine and Joseph Gaidosik, and siblings Alfred Gaidosik, Alfonse Gaidosik, Russell Gaidosik, Leonard Gaidosik, Emily Von Cannon, Frances Molina, Julie Hubenak, Pauline Skrivanek, Annie Matak, Mary Gregurek, Lucy Bushnell, Johnny Gaidosik, William Gaidosik and Pete Gaidosik. Survivors to cherish her memory are sister Gertrude Hall, son James Butler and wife Beatrice, daughters, Betty Kristynik and husband Marvin and Nancy Koenig and husband Fred; Grandchildren: Kimberly Hollas and husband Donald, Kristopher Kristynik and wife Stacy, Kara Mahand and husband Brandon, Kalie Wallace, James Butler II and wife Kerri, Neil Butler, Jenny DelPrete and husband John; Great Grandchildren: Hailey abd Ally Hollas, Ava and Anna Kristynik, Mason and Madison Wallace, Blakely, Schaefer and Collin Mahand, Jimmy and Jonathan Butler, and Betty and Rhodes Butler. Matylde was born May 9, 1921 in Sparks, Oklahoma and welcoming her into the world as one of what would become 17 children were parents Josephine and Joseph Gaidosik. Matylde spent her early life growing up and working on the family farm near Needville at Four Corners and attending Marlow School in the country. Throughout her life she shared many colorful stories of her childhood with her family. In 1939, she married the love of her life, LD Butler of Wallis, Texas. They settled in Wharton that year and it became her home for 77 years. For 57 years they continually shared a most loving and rewarding life together. In May of 1944, dad was drafted for WWII duty in the Pacific and for over two years she was left to provide and care for their two children. She worked at a butcher shop, café waiting tables, took in sewing, picked cotton, and did what it took to make ends meet. While they were separated at this time, they wrote many letters and she kept them in two shoeboxes all these many years. Her strength, determination and faith saw her through these hard years without dad. Soon after his return, Matylde began commuting to The University of Houston and in time received her teaching degree. For 34 years she taught in the Wharton I.S.D. and dedicated her professional life to teach “language arts”—the love of reading. She instilled high standards and an appreciation for the English language to those she taught. Even when retired and in her 80’s, she volunteered at Sivells Elementary School to work with SL children for whom she had a deep appreciation as she too had been an SL student speaking only Czech as a first grader. Later in her career years, she earned a master’s degree in counseling from Prairie View A&M becoming a middle school counselor to help change the lives of troubled youth. Matylde was a 50 year member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and served as president and held other offices over the decades. She truly loved her active and retired teacher friends and looked forward to their times together. She also was an artist winning many awards through the years. She along with Louise Volz, Lois King and many others began the Wharton Art League. For many years she taught art lessons to children at the Art League house. Matylde’s brush strokes still live on at the Pecan House in town, the wall of Old Rugeley Blasingame Hospital and the wall mural of churches adorning Wharton. Matylde was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and in later years preparing the monthly newsletter to be mailed. She joined the Sewing Circle in retirement at church and each week met to sew baby blankets, lap quilts, and Christmas stockings for those in need. She loved and adored her sewing group friends so very much. Mom loved to fish and did she ever. Matagorda was her favorite spot from the Colorado River to West Bay. She enjoyed being out on the water with mother nature. Other interests were gardening, quilting and cooking. But her greatest love and joy was her family, especially her 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She relished the time she spent with them. Matylde was one of the sweetest and most unselfish persons known. She was always doing for and giving to others. She had a special love for all people and never met a stranger. The last year and a half were extra tough on her as Alzheimer really took hold. Through it all even when she could not speak, the only words spoken that one could understand were “thank you” and “I love you”! She was all about kisses and smiles and LOVE. That really sums her up. A special “thank you” to Joe, Bob and Bill Hudgins for their warm hospitality each and every day mom was driven through the ranch at Hungerford so she could talk to “her cows”. Those were happy times for her. A deep appreciation and love goes to Doris Grey and Kay Johnson for their many years of terrific care and love for mom. She loved them so. Her last 13 months at Rose Hill were exceptional with needed care. The caregivers fell in love with her and she fell in love with them. Mom, you were a most loving mom, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, friend and teacher. You will forever be loved and always live in our hearts. We will miss you terribly, but so happy you are now with your LD. 1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love.
