Mary Kubena Werner

In the still of peaceful slumber, Mary Kubena Werner yielded her spirit and went home to be with her Lord. Born of Czech heritage, she stands at heaven's gate and says "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith." Mary Kubena Werner was born November 9, 1917 to Lee and Mary Krall in East Bernard, Texas. Mary Millie Krall married August S. Kubena in 1939. They had 4 children, Genevieve Elliott, Jo Josephine Short, Caroline Woebse and Martha Benevelli. Mary loved gardening and canning and all that came out of her garden. She was known to her grandchildren as "Grand Mary". She did a lot of sewing and making school clothes for her daughters. She worked side by side with her husband running the Kubena Boot Shop & Guy Cotton Gin. She was a member of S.P.J.S.T. of Needville for many, many years, serving as secretary for several of those years. Mary and August were married for 26 years. Later in life she married Victor Werner. They were married for 30 years. They owned the Werner washeteria. Preceded in death: Husband, August S. Kubena; 2nd Husband, Victor Werner; Sister, Annie Kruppa, Brother, Emil Krall; Son-in-law, Gary Woebse; and Grandson Wendel Short. Mary is survived by daughters, Genevieve Elliott of Nashville, TN; Josephine Short and husband Norman R. Short of Rosenberg, TX; Caroline Woebse of Rosenberg, TX; and Martha Benevelli and husband Thomas Benevelli of Southington, CT; Grandchildren, August Skopik, Jr. and wife Sandi of Katy, TX; Katherine Ann Skopik of Nashville, TN; Marcella Lynn Moses and husband Michael Dale Moses of Corpus Christi, TX; Christopher Lee Skopik and wife Shinelle of Katy, TX; Pamela Crosley and husband Charles of Richmond, TX; Lisa Woebse of Rosenberg, TX; Graham Benevelli and wife Tahira of Austin, TX; Great Grandchildren, Lance Skopik II, Chase Skopik, Brice Skopik, Donald Johnson, III, Colan Nelson, Allison Nelson, Michael Moses, Jennifer Moses, Jorden Moses, Matthew Moses, Lisa Skopik, Ariel Englehart, Skylar Skopik, Miranda Skopik, Katelyn Crosley, Hannah Crosley, and Seth Crosley. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 28, 2009 in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church of Rosenberg in Rosenberg, TX. Interment will follow at Needville Public Cemetery in Needville, TX. The family would like to thank hospice, and all the doctors and nurses at Oak Bend for their help, care and compassion that they provided to Mary and the Kubena family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Rosenberg or to a charity of choice.
