James Arthur Vickers

Funeral services for James Arthur Vickers, 85, of Rosenberg, Texas will be held at 2:30 P.M., Saturday, October 31, 2009 in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Interment with military honors will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Rev. Claude Villemaire and Dr. Donnie Melton will officiate the services. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Friday, October 30, 2009 in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg. James was born on February 13, 1924 in Electra, Texas to Luther George and Charlotte Bilbrey Vickers. He honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. James enjoyed fishing at Chinquepin and tending to his garden, often sharing his vegetables with family and friends. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Rosenberg. James was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #3903 and the American Legion Post #271. He started out farming, next going into the construction business, and last he began a 25 year career as a mechanic with Houston Lighting and Power, now known as Reliant Energy. James cherished the time he spent with his family and was known by the grandkids as "Pa Pa". He went to be with the Lord on October 28, 2009 in Richmond, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Charlotte Vickers; son, James Arthur Vickers, Jr.; and all of his siblings. James is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Bernice LaNell Vickers, of Rosenberg; daughters, Charlotte Matus and husband, J.C., of Texas City and Barbara Bryan and husband, Joseph of Richmond; grandchildren, Leigh Ann O'Leary and husband, Aaron, of Cypress, Kevin Street and fiancée, Deanna Linder, of Houston; great grandchildren, Ethan O'Leary and Liam O'Leary, of Cypress ; along with other relatives and many friends. Pallbearers will be Kevin Street, Aaron O'Leary, Kevin Wile, Herb Copeland, Willie Poncik and John Wile. Honorary pallbearers will be J.B. Davenport, Corky Vickers, Joe DeLeon, Johnny King and Eugene Nesvadba. In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude, that memorial contributions in James' name be made to V.F.W.
