Elmer O. Varland

Elmer O. Varland began his journey through life on August 2, 1920, in Rake, Iowa. He went to be with the Lord at the age of 92 on Saturday, January 26, 2013 in Richmond, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mary Azzarro Varland; parents, Selmer and Amanda EcongerVarland; infant brother, Vernon Varland; brother, Omer Varland and wife, Margie; and sister-in-law, Ferne Varland. Elmer leaves behind his daughter, Marlene Anhaiser and husband, Charles; three grandsons, Sean Christopher, Micheal Joseph and Jonathan Edward Anhaiser; sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Arnold Tuttle of Albert Lea, Minnesota; brother, Myron Varland of California; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Elmer proudly served in the United States Army from 1943 - 1945. After his discharge from the Army, he worked for General Motors in Kansas City and it was there that he met his wife, Mary whom he married in Albert Lea, Minnesota and later moved to Texas. For many years, he worked for Manchester Terminal near the Port of Houston. After retirement, he was active in church related activities at The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Houston and later at Peace Lutheran Church in Rosenberg. He loved people and life, enjoyed working in his yard and garden, and having visits from the neighbors, but watching his grandsons grow up was always at the top of his list. The family wishes to sincerely thank Memorial Hermann Hospital/Hospice nurses, the staff at Oak Bend Medical Center, Encompass Home Health for the loving care they provided as well as Dr. Jimmie Robertson, M.D., Dr. Paolo Champion, M.D., Dr. Edward Chan, M.D., Dr. Robert Hillery, M.D., Dr. James McClamrock, M.D., Dr. Micheal Maier, M.D., Reverend Retired Norman Albertson and Pastor Kastnor at Peace Lutheran Church for their many home and hospital visits, communion visits and their loving concern. The family also thanks everyone for their prayers, calls, visits, expressions of concern for Elmer. He always appreciated knowing that people asked about him and were praying for him. He lived a long, good life and was always appreciative to God for the many blessings bestowed on him. He lived knowing he was loved and cared about by all and died knowing the same...how much richer can life be? His journey now continues in heaven surrounded by family and friends that have passed on before him and surrounded him with their love. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 28, 2013 in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Interment with military honors will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.
