Edward Weil Smith

Edward (Ed) Weil Smith of Needville, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on February 19, 2025, at the age of 91. Ed was born April 10, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas to Elmer Smith and Geneva Farnsworth. After growing up in Houston, Ed proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1951 – 1955, where he received technical training in the field of electronics along with completing several classes at the U.S. Fleet Sonar School in San Diego, California, obtaining certifications in the operation, tactical use and operational maintenance of Sonar and associated equipment. In civilian life, Ed worked as an electronic technician before retirement. After leaving the Navy, Ed met and married the love of his life, Mildred Maroul while working at his first job for Municipal Supply Company in Houston, Texas. They had a long and beautiful life together for 52 years and created a loving, warm and supportive family life, while raising their eight children with the emphasis that God will provide whatever is needed in life if we place our Faith and Trust in the Lord. Ed became a strong devout Catholic throughout his life and enjoyed serving others. He loved electronics and used his skills wisely. One of Ed’s hobbies included photography, of which he successfully passed the baton on to his children. In his free time, Ed could be found in the kitchen cooking and experimenting with new recipes. He enjoyed the fellowship and breaking of bread with others. As a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend, Ed will be dearly missed! Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Smith and Geneva (Farnsworth) Wright; his beloved wife of 52 years, Mildred Smith; his son in law, Harold Melton; and his two grandsons, Travis Henrichsen and Zac Melton. Ed is survived by his siblings, Donald Smith (Dixie), Charles Smith (Kathy), and Angelina Van Ostrand (Ken); his eight children, Patricia Melton, Linda Oldag (Ben), Edward Smith (Georgia), Gloria Henrichson (Ricky), Anthony Smith (Sharon), Pamela Smith (Stan Broniak), Elaine Raesner, and Mildred Hlavinka (Carlton); his grandchildren, Sam Melton, Holly Breakfield (Tom), Amy Sodolak (Owen), Nathan Henrichsen (Melissa), Ryan Henrichsen (April Teel), Russell Petee, Kevin Smith (Kayli), Brooke Johnston (Jesslie), Courtney Yetman (Marc), Bryan Hlavinka, Kyle Hlavinka (Jacklyn Hendrix) and Marissa “Roo” Hlavinka; and his great grandchildren, Ollie Melton, Jameson Breakfield, Raiden Breakfield, Hunter Sodolak, Haley Sodolak, Lucas Henrichsen, Ryan Petee, Andrew Smith, Jase Johnston, Tate Johnston, and Jaxson Yetman; and his special friend, Ken Stavinoha. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, aids and staff members of OakBend Medical Center (Williams Way and Jackson Street locations), as well as the professional staff, nurses and volunteers associated with Windsor Hospice and Palliative Care Services – Needville, that gave their love and support in the care of Ed Smith. Visitation will be held from 5:00PM - 8:00PM, with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00PM on Friday, February 21, 2025 in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. The Funeral Mass, burial and reception will take place at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Damon, Texas on Saturday, February 22, 2025, beginning at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church at 603 Parrott Ave, Damon, Texas 77430 or Windsor Hospice and Palliative Care Services at 11750 Padon Road, Needville, Texas 77461.
